Beginner Step 1 - Preparation
Preparing to be a golfer
Very likely your muscles are just not strong enough to immediately utlize a good golf swing. Just having enough muscle to keep the forward arm straight, your knees are not capable of always being at least slightly bent, not to mention the rotational aspect of the swing.
Keep doing the beginners exercise program at least 5 days a week. It may take an entire year to build the muscle strength while developing the muscle memory for a repeatable swing.
What and where do I find golf clubs for me?

Beginner Step 2 - Holding the club
We recommend the interlocking grip. Fortunately, all the practice clubs and practice grips force your hands into the correct interlocking positions. Again, I recommend learning how to transfer the practice grip to a regular grip.
To this end, GLG has arranged with an eCommerce website to sell the "Grip Learning" unit of two grips, one a practice grip and the other a white grip with outlines where your hands and fingers should be placed.
You really don't need this training aid, but if it works for you, go with it as it is the easiest way to learn a good grip.
Most amateurs place their thumbs directly down the shaft. Please learn the correct grip and never go back just because you are used to the wrong grip. A bad grip directly affects your swing.
Learning how to: Grip the club

The proper grip? Get a practice club or regrip a club with a grip trainer. The grip has bumpy things to guide your hands to the correct grip.
The issue is taking the placement of the hands on a practice grip to a non-practice grip.
Never place your thumbs directly down the shaft which causes tension in the wrists. Tension is always bad.
Exercise: Swing to get used to the grip and body motion

You are not going to worry if your stance is not close to correct. This exercise is just to get used to the grip and the forces as you gently swing back and forth.

Beginner Step 3 - Stance that looks good
Learning how to: Take the proper stance

The proper stance is actually very easy. This video goes over bending the knees, bending from your hips (not stomach) which allows the arms to hang down vertically.
We'll also look at getting ready to load the inside of the back foot, just like a baseball pitcher would do. By keeping your weight on the inside of the back foot your body stays inside of your feet and is very vertical, not swaying over the outside of the back foot, creating far too much movement for a good swing.
This stance will feel very comfortable, yet we will have to build up your knees and get used to bending from the hips.
Learning how to: Position stance to the ball
It's easier to use a video to demonstrate.

Starting from the beginning, the grip, ready to ready fire the backswing. Exercise: Bending over the ball

A very important exercise, you will need to build up several muscle groups although it looks easy.
Make sure your arms are straight down when you bend. This position is both setup and when the ball is hit.

Beginner Step 4 - Swing back and forth
First I want you to visit your local hardware store and purchase a piece of ½" dowel, usually 36" long. Take a "chip clip" and fasten the dowel to the front of your pants. As you swing the club I want you to get used to moving the knees which allows you to properly rotate your hips, which the dowel will help clearly show. We'll start with a small swing and advance to where the club is in the air in the swing plane.
Learning how to: Rotate your hips

Without the dowel you may not realize you are not rotating your hips. Learning how to: Start the swing

The bottom part of the swing. Starting and staying in the Swing Plane.
What is the Swing Plane and why it is important to you.
Exercise: Half-way back and half-way forward swinging (45 degrees)

Half-way back and half-way forward swinging (45 degrees) Exercise: Swing back and forth 90 degrees

Swing back and forth 90 degrees making sure you stay in the swing plane. -
Beginner Step 4a - Time to go to the course
You have learned
Basically your body now feels comfortable swing back and forth, at most 90 degrees back and forth. That's basically all you need on your first round. Don't swing hard and hit the ball at the bottom of your swing. If you hit the ball 50 yards, great. Now go right up to the ball again and hit again. You certainly will see how the rest of your group is doing and you may be fine hitting 50 yards again and again. You will soon know what works for you.
You should expect
♦ Have enough confidence about what is happening to enjoy the day.
♦ Expect that everyone knows this is your first round. You will make friends if they find you can keep up to their pace.
♦You probably won't lose many golf balls at this point of your career. Nevertheless expect this cost as part of the cost of playing golf. Use cheap balls so you won't feel bad not wasting lots of valuable time pocking around in the flora.
♦ Expect you will need to smile and laugh no matter how good or bad you may play.
♦ Don't keep score. It's just a bad habit. Say no if someone asks.
♦ Expect to have fun.You should watch out for
♦ Taking too many practice swings. No more than one per hole as practice swings take away needed energy.
♦ Don't fall behind - If necessary just pick up your ball and carry it to the green. You won't have to do this as you play more.
♦ Appreciate the view and share it with your group. Golf is a social game and having a good common experience in the great outdoors is a win for everyone. -
