Back Swing

  • Take Away to "A" Position

    Takeaway to 90 degrees

The purpose of the take away is using the body to keep the club head in the swing plane. The take away is a swing, not a lift. By keeping the left arm in line with the club shaft, keeping the arms and body as a tight triangle, that is, not moving the hands, wrists, and arms and using the body to do all the moving, you will end up with the body at a bit less than 90 degrees the club will move to a horizontal position with the clubhead straight up.This is in the swing plane.

As for your legs, the forward knee is bent allowing the body to turn while you are loading up your back leg, with the pressure on the back foot instep which all results in most of your weight on the back foot instep. You will be pushing off using the back foot instep as we see in 2 steps.

Don't be in a rush: slow is good taking the club to the back "A" position according to Jack Nicklaus. It gives time to be in the correct positions and helps your concentration.

  • From "A" to Top Position

    To Top

Assuming  you have twisted yourself into your body being close to vertical, just lift your front arm to be over your back shoulder. By doing so you are keeping the clubhead in the swing plane. keep your arms extended, just as in the first back movement. Don't worry about the back arm as doing the lifting of the front arm will make the back arm elbow bent, but keep the elbow fairly near your side. The straighter your front arm the better. Shorter shots don't need to rotate the club over your head.
